Vosloorus athlete needs support to compete in Comrades Marathon
He was inspired by professional athletes who he described as some of his favourite athletes including Steven Mokonka, Bongmusa Mthembu and the late Joe Baba.
Vosloorus athlete Lucky Amon Zwane (42) desperately needs financial assistance as he prepares to compete in the ultimate human race, the Comrades Marathon, for the first time on August 28 in Kwa Zulu-Natal.
Having participated in short distance races for over a decade, this Vosloorus athlete aspires to go big at the 2022 Comrade Marathon race.
The 42-year-old athlete from Kwena Street, Ext 20, Vosloorus expressed his desire to compete in the race.
He is pleading with locals and the local business community to donate funds for transportation and accommodation.
“I am also looking for a full-time sponsor to fund my sporting activities and to assist purchasing sport gear,” said Zwane.
He said he fell in love with the running track when he was young, but only started participating in short-distance competitions in 2010.
Zwane said he was inspired by professional athletes who he described as some of his favourite athletes including Steven Mokonka, Bongmusa Mthembu and the late Joe Baba.
“I am currently training for the 90km Comrades Marathon which is the biggest race I have ever entered by far,” he said.
According to Zwane, he started practicing for the Comrades Marathon race at the beginning of this year.
“I did my first 42km race in Auckland Park and continued to participate in several races around Gauteng and North West.
“I was excited but nervous at the same time but managed to complete the race and reach the finish line at a record of 4:15,” he explained.
He also took part in Alan Robb’s 32km race, the Motsepe Foundation 42km, Miway Wally Hayward 42km race and 50km in the Om Die Dam On at Hartebeespoort on June 11.
“My performance was great at Hartebeespoort. I was doing 50km and managed to finish in 3:49. Overall, I managed to obtain two bronze and six silver medals,” he said.
Zwane noted that his performance has improved because of his commitment.

He normally trains four times a week and has realised the importance of consistency in his training routine, he explained.
Brief Background
Zwane is originally from Harrismith Intabazwe, Free State. He moved to Johannesburg in 1998 after completing his matric.
He worked at a construction company, Infinite Blue Motau Projects, based in Midrand but lost his job due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I survive with part-time jobs at the moment while I am still looking for proper full-time employment,” he said.
Besides running he is also a father to two beautiful children, a boy Siphesihle (5) and a seven-month-old girl Sibahle.
Future plans
Zwane intends to continue following his passion on the running track. He will be doing Soweto Marathon on November 6, 2022.
“I am also planning to donate school shoes to orphanages and underprivileged learners by raising funds while I participate in major sporting races,” Zwane said.
