Melukuhle competed against other local schools earlier this year at the Germiston Stadium and dominated in the 100m, 200m and 400m events.
He won in both the 100 and 200m sprints.
“I love athletics. I started participating in athletics while I was in Grade Seven in Durban,” he said.
He said he competes both at school and club level, which helps him to remain in top form.
“My school coach took me to train with Thulani Sibeko at the Germiston Stadium. I eventually joined the Cool Running Athletics Club,” said Gumede.
“I want to be the best athlete I can be and be a record holder. After my matric I would like to obtain a qualification in IT,” said Gumede.
Melody has been a proud and supportive mother.
“Every day after training I make sure he does his school work. There must be a balance between both academics and sports,” said Melody.
