The learners showcased different dances from their various cultures.

The organiser of the event, Casielra Titus, told Germiston City News the importance of creating a tolerant society among school children.

Ukugida is a translation of dance in Zulu.

“We had the children dress up in different traditional outfits to allow them to learn about the heritage of their peers. It is important to create a culture of unity in the school and among the learners,” said Titus.

She said celebrating different cultures was essential in establishing the spirit of Ubuntu.

“We just wanted to let the learners know that we are one. In the past two years, with Covid, we couldn’t have any events as a school. We thought it would be great to host this day to create that relationship among learners,” she said.

The learners danced and educated each other about their respective cultural dances.

The school also hosted a food-eating contest with different cultures represented on the tables and Nigeria won.

“We are trying to teach our children that they are going to be the leaders of tomorrow and thus must learn to be tolerant of others. Our country is open to many cultures, including our neighbouring countries,” said Titus.
