John Proctor, the head of the kitchen, said they are seeing a decline in the number of people attending the soup kitchen.

“From what I hear, most people have not returned from their December holidays. When I speak with the regulars, they say some members have found jobs. I also know of some regulars who found employment,” said Proctor.

“It is great to see people employed. It means that they can start sustaining themselves. Hopefully, they will one day make contributions toward the kitchen,“ said Proctor.

“Last week, we had high attendance. We believe it is because of the cold, rainy weather.”

Proctor said that though the numbers are nothing compared to last year, they are not discouraged because there are those who really need assistance, and they do come.

“We open our doors to those who need the help. Our worry is how people get to the soup kitchen with all the rain. We see many mothers with children coming through our gates,” said Proctor.

He joined the soup kitchen in 2021 and took over from Jenny Schneigansz when she retired.

He said that despite being new, last year was a great year to witness.

“Ackermans Pharmacy has been a blessing.

“They deliver bread for us and, on Wednesdays, they bring cooked soup. We call for more sponsors because we need more assistance with vegetables,” said Proctor.

“We are registering under a new name, Primrose Oos Sopkombuis (Primrose East Soup Kitchen),” said Proctor. For more details, contact 064 385 3431.
