Resident Mapontso Mopeli said there is a concern about the state of the area.

“The City of Ekurhuleni and ward councillor seem to have forgotten about Gosforth. Things are falling apart and it seems they are not bothered by the situation,” said Mapontso.
She said she has been a resident for over 20 years in the area and the area seems to be deteriorating every day.
On February 4, the community gathered to clean up their neighbourhood.
“Money was collected from each household and residents used their own resources to get the work done.
“The area had overgrown verges, potholes, and trees in need of trimming,” said Mopeli.
“The trees have not been trimmed for a long time and are damaging electrical wires. We had to do something about it.
“All these issues should be attended to by the CoE but I guess they don’t care,” said Mopeli.
From the money that was collected, residents bought petrol for the petrol lawnmower to cut grass and trim trees and cement to refill the potholes.
Mopeli said contributions to get the work done in the area have become a norm because residents are concerned that if they had to wait for the CoE their concerns would not be addressed.
“We have open spaces with overgrown grass. We requested the city to clean up these areas but we are told it is private property,” said Mopeli.

Mampontso said it is not fair that residents have to pay extra to get things done.

“We pay taxes and expect service delivery, but we are getting nothing. We are receiving no joy as residents.
“Times are hard and to take extra money out of your pocket for something you are already paying for is not fair,” said Mopeli.
Germiston City News requested comment from the ward Clr Jean Ingram and the City of Ekurhuleni, asking to comment by February 10.
At the time of going to print no comment had been received.
