Katlehong church needs food donations

“At the start of the year, we received a long list of children who needed uniforms and school shoes and we had to use the church’s offerings to provide for those in need.”

The Worship Centre Christian Ministries (WCCM) feeds at least 150 disadvantaged children every Sunday at the church premises on Masakhane Street, Mngadi Section, Katlehong.

The church has faced financial difficulties since the Covid-19 pandemic hit SA. They desperately need the community and local businesses to support them so that they can continue their feeding scheme.

According to pastor John Barnabath, they started the feeding scheme in 2008 when they realised many children from poverty-stricken and child-headed families were hungry during the church service.

Initially, they fed the children at Thembalethu and Nokulunga primary schools.

“We were surprised because their parents would also come to eat. That is when we noticed it is not just the children who are affected,” said Barnabath.

“Eventually, we moved out of the school. The challenge is that the numbers increased and even church members assisted, but it was not enough because we struggled to provide for everyone.”

Barnabath said besides helping with food, they also had to assist the children with school shoes and uniforms.

“At the start of the year, we received a long list of children who needed school uniforms and school shoes. We had to use the church’s offerings to provide for those in need.”

He also noted that the church is committed to helping learners complete their tertiary education through donations and church offerings.
