City gives feedback on Crown Road problems

Residents can apply for extra bins if one 240l bin is insufficient for a week’s waste.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) responded to the complaints about lawlessness from Crown Road residents.

The GCN previously reported that Michael John van Molendorf was fed-up with illegal dumping, cars speeding on the one-way road and residents who urinated in public spaces.

The paper questioned why the by-laws were not enforced and services not rendered (waste not collected).

Van Molendorf had also complained about roadsides blocked by overgrown trees.

City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the parks division will soon have the ‘cherry picker’ operational to cut back the trees.

“The City renders door-to-door refuse service and litter picking once weekly on Wednesdays.

“However, the challenge is the backyard dwellers who dispose of their domestic refuse in open spaces or on street corners without following the refuse collection schedule,” explained Dlamini.

“Illegally dumped waste is cleared with limited resources for the entire Germiston area on a rotational basis.

Therefore, illegally dumped waste is not collected in other areas for some time,” said Dlamini.

“If there is an interruption in the waste collection, the City provides constant updates to residents as and when there are new developments in resolving the backlogs through ward councillors, SMS and customer relations management,” he said.

“The City has moved from the bag systems to 240l bins to ensure the safety of employees, containerisation of waste to reduce illegal dumping and prevent revenue leakage,” said Dlamini.

Residents can apply for additional bins if one 240l bin is insufficient.

Bins are available for collection at the Germiston depot on the corner of Ostend and Jack Pienaar roads or call 011 999 1267.
