Local cricketer to play in tournament held in India

His team, the Rising Challengers, are the reigning South African champions after winning the Last Man Stands SA Championships played in Bloemfontein last year.

Bedfordview cricketer Troye Herwill will jet off to Delhi for the Indian Super Series tournament taking place between March 17 and 23.

The cricketer who plays Last Man Stands (LMS) cricket in Bedfordview was offered the opportunity to play for the Putna Pirates.

Coming from a sports-oriented family, Troye started playing cricket in 2014. He manages an indoor sports arena in Pomona and teaches golf at primary schools.

All this while also studying for his level one coaching certificate for cricket.

“India is like the cricketing hub of the world. Everyone would love to go to India to play cricket. They are brilliant at it,” he said.

He played for UJ Soweto before getting into LMS. The LMS is an international league for amateur and semi-pro cricketers.

It is T20 cricket with 20 overs, five-ball overs instead of six and eight players on a team.

“I have always loved sports. I tried rugby and boxing before moving to cricket. I have participated in several tournaments and have gone on to win some leagues as well,” he said.

In 2019, he was named the best bowler at the Cape Town SA Champs, a title he was also awarded at the Bloemfontein SA Champs.

He is an all-rounder.

“Learning that I was one of the chosen players for the tournament wasn’t expected. It is an elite league, and players are chosen based on their stats.

“I am excited and overjoyed at the opportunity and anxious because of the short notice to raise funds,” concluded Troye.

He has started a BackaBuddy campaign to raise funds and is running a Win a Barrow of Fun raffle.
