Avril Elizabeth Home hosts cycling challenge and family fun day

From 100km to 50m: Every pedal stroke matters as Avril Elizabeth Home hosts cycling fundraiser.

Cyclists, e-bike enthusiasts, and locals are invited to Fishers Hill for a cycling challenge and family fun day on November 8.

The event forms part of the Avril Elizabeth Home’s ongoing Every Step Matters campaign, which aims to raise R750 000 to upgrade hydrotherapy and wet facilities for residents living with severe physical and intellectual disabilities.

Building on the R50 000 raised during its inaugural 2025 edition, the campaign has gathered R29 865 to date.

At the center of the initiative is Tumi, the travelling teddy, a campaign mascot symbolising the movement and physical therapy challenges faced by the home’s residents daily.

All cycling events will start and finish at the Avril Elizabeth Home premises at 11 Castor Road, Fishers Hill, Germiston. Helmets are compulsory for all participating riders.

The 100km training ride, designed for experienced cyclists, passes through Carnival City, Petit, and Pomona. It starts at 06:15 and the entry fee is R500.

The 50km ride is open to recreational cyclists and e-bike riders. It starts at 06:15 with an entry fee of R250.

A 50m kiddies’ fun ride, suitable for children aged four to 10, runs continuously from 09:00 to 12:00, with an entry fee of R50.

Riders on the longer routes will be accompanied by support vehicles, with water points and nutrition sponsored by 32Gi.

Running alongside the cycling events from 09:00 to 13:00, a family fun day will feature children’s entertainment, including face painting, a balloon artist, and a balloon pond donated by Fierce Fusion Festivities. On-site refreshments will be provided, with MacSmith’s Coffee Co. donating a portion of its event proceeds to the home.

“For community members unable to ride, the organisation is encouraging individuals to sign up as ‘Active Avril Ambassadors’ to raise funds through their own chosen sporting activities, or to contribute directly to the Every Step Matters page on BackaBuddy.

Financial contributions qualify for a Section 18A tax certificate,” said marketing, sport, and events coordinator Salome Smith.
