Local sheroes of all ages celebrated and honoured on Women’s Day

The spirit of unity, resilience, and empowerment filled the air as women from diverse backgrounds came together in Bedfordview to commemorate Women's Day.

Women from all walks of life converged in Nicol Hotel to mark Women’s Day.

The event, organised by Ward 20 committee member Mona Naidoo, focused on honouring women of various ages who have left an indelible mark on society through courage and determination.

Sponsored by Mercedes Benz Motus Bedfordview, the event was a heartwarming tribute to the sheroes of the past, present and future.

Reflecting on the legacy of the women who marched on that fateful day in 1956, Naidoo reminded the audience how these women chose to come together, united by a common purpose.

“There were about 20 000 signatures on that petition. These women were not just advocating for the rights of women but for the rights of all people in South Africa.

“They ventured into uncharted territory, a space where no man had gone before.”

Amid the inspiring speeches that touched on vulnerability, resilience, empowerment, motherhood, success and courage, attendees were in for an additional treat as raffles and prizes added an element of excitement to the day.

Ballet dancer Gia Segal (12) entertained the audience with her skills.

Each speaker shared personal stories and insights that resonated with the attendees.

Reflecting on the historic march of 1956, Naidoo reminded the audience, “For 30 minutes, they stood in absolute silence, with children on their backs. Some had travelled great distances to be there.

“In that stillness, their true power emerged. Our strength lies in our unity,” she said.

The day was not just a celebration of the past but a reminder of the legacy of those courageous women.

“We come from that lineage. We are South African women, carrying within us the courage and conviction of those who came before us. We hold the divine in our hearts,” emphasised Naidoo.
