A rescue team from Alberton Fire Station, comprising six firefighters, found both occupants trapped inside the wreckage.
They were extricated using hydraulic rescue equipment (Jaws of Life) and declared dead on scene by paramedics.
DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi said the truck driver escaped the collision unharmed.
“The tanker, which was transporting 45 000 litres of diesel from Durban to Wadeville, did not suffer any fuel spillage or major damage,” said Ntladi.
“The roadway was temporarily closed while emergency services conducted rescue and recovery operations. The scene has since been handed over to the EMPD for further investigations,” said Ntladi.
