“When one is in grief, support from a neighbour can go a long way, because sometimes family might not be close by or you might not even have a family. We offer that support of getting you through a difficult time,” said Hlapolosa.
The group was established in 2024 after seeing a need for support during times of grief.
“We are not a stokvel; we are a group to relieve the load. We understand as women we carry a lot, especially when there is something happening in our households, and funerals can be draining,” said the chairperson.
The group comes carrying more than just food and supplies; they bring comfort, compassion, and a shared understanding of loss. The group supports families in mourning with prayer throughout the period of preparation.

They also donate cash and groceries towards the funeral, and assist with cooking on the day of the funeral.
“They pray, not only for the departed but for the strength of the family left behind. Their prayers become a source of peace, offering reassurance that no one has to endure grief alone. As the community, we are with them,” said Hlapolosa.
She said the reason they decided to do this is to allow the grieving family the space to process their loss without the burden of logistics.
What makes this group truly special is not just what they do, but how they do it. There is no expectation of recognition or reward.
Their actions are rooted in a deep sense of community and shared humanity. Many of them have stood on the sidelines, once receiving this same kindness, and now giving it freely to others.
Through prayer, service, and unwavering compassion, the group turns moments of deep sorrow into powerful reminders of love and togetherness.
Hlapolosa said if you’re a woman in Leondale and would like to join the group, contact her on 084 586 9559.
