EMPD cracks down on illegal mining: six arrested in Germiston

In a decisive move against illegal mining, EMPD officers apprehended six suspects with mining gear in Germiston, signalling strict enforcement ahead.

The EMPD Intervention Unit has arrested six undocumented foreign nationals for illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act in Germiston.

The arrests took place on August 8, during a sting operation targeting illegal mining activities across the City of Ekurhuleni.

Officers raided an illegal mining site in the Marathon informal settlement, intercepting the suspects in possession of mining equipment.

Confiscated items included 52 steel balls, two phendukas, three chains, and a small generator.

The men were taken to Germiston Police Station and are expected to appear in Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of illegal mining and immigration violations.
