City of Ekurhuleni works to restore electricity after Dukathole substation fire

Illegal tampering at Dukathole substation caused an explosion, leaving residents without electricity; city technicians await key parts to resume service.

Germiston City News previously reported on the plight of Dukathole residents, who have been without electricity for nearly four weeks following an explosion at a local substation.

According to the City of Ekurhuleni, the explosion and fire at the Dukathole substation were caused by illegal connections that had been tampered with directly inside the facility.

In response to the crisis, the city confirmed that a technical investigation was conducted. While a full summary of the findings has not yet been made public, officials are attributing the damage to the growing problem of illegal connections in the area.

“City technicians are currently working on repairs and have reportedly placed orders for critical spare parts, which are essential to restoring the substation.

“The estimated delivery date for these components is July 28, 2025, after which a timeline for full restoration will be communicated,” said Zweli Dlamini, City spokesperson.

He explained that the delay in providing an interim power solution, such as mobile substations or generators, is due to procurement challenges. Although the city has a plan in place, progress has been held back by outstanding equipment.

The city has confirmed that funding for the substation repairs has been secured, but did not specify the amount or the source of the funds.

Regarding prevention, Dlamini said the city is enforcing bylaws and working with law enforcement to address tampering with infrastructure and to clamp down on illegal connections.

In the meantime, the local ward councillor has been engaging with residents through public meetings. While there is no clear restoration timeline yet, the city said updates will be provided once the required parts have arrived.

However, officials have also warned that ongoing theft and vandalism of infrastructure may lead to further delays, even after electricity has been restored.
