Police conduct road safety awareness

“It is always advisable to have proof of payment for every item purchased.”

Police increased their visibility as they conducted a road safety awareness campaign at Brickfield road Spruitview, on August 22.

Katlehong South SAPS media liaison officer Constable Sivenkosi Mtwa said motorists were advised to be cautious of car hijackings and online purchases of vehicles.

He said the aim was to educate motorists who fall victims to car hijacking, at times being kidnapped at gunpoint and robbed of valuable items including physical cash or using the victim’s banking app.

The road safety awareness campaign was led by a second-hand goods officer, Warrant Officer Nkosi, with support from the EMPD, sector managers, reservists and a social crime prevention coordinator.

Police hand out safety tips during the road safety awareness campaign at Brickfield Road, Spruitview, on August 22.

Mtwa distributed pamphlets with safety tips for people who buy properties online, including vehicles, whereby one has not seen them physically.

“This is a trap that people always find themselves in and the same modus operandi is used by perpetrators.”
Warrant Officer Nkosi said buying or selling stolen goods is an offense and a person can be prosecuted.

“It is always advisable to have proof of payment for every item purchased. We also encourage communities to refrain from buying goods at unregistered pawn shops,” said Nkosi.
