Hikers trek for 8km at Melville Koppies

Hikers are advised to wear sensible shoes, a hat and bring your own water bottle.

More than 50 hikers from all corners of Johannesburg took part in the challenging 8km trail across Melville Koppies on January 28.

Volunteer Jenny Grice explained that the hike started in the enclosed nature reserve side, with hikers speeding straight up the Koppies before crossing into Melville Koppies East for the iconic views of the city.

She said that from there they had another slog back up the hill into the nature reserve.

“With a break at the lecture hut, hikers could choose to take a gentle stroll back home on their own or to continue with the guided hike.

“Although there were many more ups and downs to be conquered, hikers showed no signs of wavering with many completing the hike. Some of them looked like they could do it all over again,” said Grice.
