The inspectorate issued warnings for welfare concerns, to ensure the provision of shade, potable water and hygiene.

“These warnings come with follow-up inspections, to ensure compliance, failing which, action in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 may be taken. Education is also vital in improving the lives of these chickens,” said Peacock.

Peacock added that these “end of lay” or “spent” hens are bought from cull outlets after their egg production reduces or stops at around one year.

“Our goal is to guarantee compassion for these birds until they are sold off for consumption,” said SPCA general manager inspector Nkosingiphiwe Sibiya.

The SPCA cares for all animals and advocates for the compassionate and dignified treatment of all animals, whether they are companion, wild or farm animals.
