Collapsed power lines cause power outage in Elandsfontein

“Children were passing the cables lying on the ground. What makes it worse is it fell in front of a spaza shop. Every customer was at risk."

Residents of Elandsfontein were left without power after a power line and street light fell on April 8.

Expressing their concerns to the Germiston City News, Corrie Moller, a resident of Hattingh Street said he reported the pole to the City of Ekurhuleni, two days earlier before it collapsed.

“The pole fell dragging the power lines along with it to the ground. The wires remained live until the city technicians arrived, days later, to switch the power off on April 11,” said Moller.

“Children were passing the cables lying on the ground. What makes it worse is it fell in front of a spaza shop. Every customer was at risk.

“The city is putting lives at risk by failing to maintain their infrastructure and failing to respond timeously,” said Moller.

Patrick Pilane said the power is not supplied consistently to the area.

“Our fridges started to defrost and our food is spoiled,” said Pilane.

“We don’t know for sure that our appliances will not get damaged if the power is on. The city is quick to switch us off but they are yet to tend to our reports about the collapsed power line and pole,” said Pilane.
