School of Affirmations takes stand against bullying

“Bullying has no place in our school. We are here to build each other up, not tear each other down,” said Horn.

The School of Affirmations organised an anti-bullying march to foster a safe and supportive school environment last Monday.

Emphasising unity, the school rallied to highlight the impact of bullying, encourage empathy and empower students to take a stand.

The event began with an assembly, where principal Juanita Horn addressed the students and staff.

“Bullying has no place in our school. We are here to build each other up, not tear each other down,” said Horn.

She highlighted the importance of fostering a safe environment, explaining that when students feel secure, they are more engaged in learning and positive social interactions.

Germiston police representatives, including Sergeant Mpho Mokgawa, discussed bullying’s consequences and legal implications, explaining that bullying can have lasting emotional and legal effects on the victims and perpetrators.

“Bullying is more than just children being children; it’s a serious issue that can have real-world consequences,” she said.

She also addressed cyberbullying’s impact, encouraging responsible online behaviour, and warned that online harassment has implications.

During the march, learners carried signs with messages like “Stand Up, Speak Out” and “Be a Buddy, Not a Bully” and marched to Hout Park, chanting anti-bullying slogans and showing their commitment to ending bullying.

The event underscored the school’s commitment to teaching learners about respect and kindness.

Mokgawa praised the school’s initiative, “Awareness empowers learners, supports mental health and fosters a culture of respect. Together, we can create a future where every learner feels safe, valued and free to thrive.”
