Founder of cultural group gets recognition from Gauteng Social Development

Nkabinde recognised for his role in arts and culture during the 365 Men Awards.

Jabulani Nkabinde, founder of Ubumbano Cultural Group from Katlehong, was among the recipients of the prestigious 365 Men of the Year Award, presented on November 15 at Wits University’s Parktown campus in Johannesburg.

The award, presented by Gauteng Social Development MEC Faith Mazibuko, recognised Nkabinde’s significant impact on arts and culture.

At 36, Nkabinde has dedicated his life to empowering youth through dance, music, drama, and poetry in Katlehong.

He has also played an active role at the Gauteng Department of Social Development’s Katlehong Office, organising events like indigenous games, sports activities, Bible talks, spelling bees, and street carnivals aimed at youth and community development.“Ubumbano Cultural Group was born 19 years ago at Phumulani Secondary School,” Nkabinde said.

“What began as a group of 60 to 100 young performers in a classroom has grown into a movement promoting cultural heritage and performing arts locally and internationally.”

The organisation has showcased South African talent globally, by participating in cultural exchange festivals in Australia, Samoa, and New Zealand.

Over the years, Ubumbano Cultural Group has earned numerous awards in dance, music, drama, and poetry and collaborated with notable artists like Ihashi Elimhlophe and Winnie Khumalo.

Dedicating the award to his late mother, his team, and the broader arts community, Nkabinde urged South Africans to unite for a brighter future.

“We are a nation of diverse cultures working towards one goal – a successful South Africa. Let us raise boys and girls with strong values to build safer communities.”

The 365 Men of the Year Awards, aligning with International Men’s Day on November 19, celebrate men driving societal transformation in community development, education, health, sports, arts, and culture.

“I feel blessed to be recognised among men who are making a positive difference in our communities,” Nkabinde said.
