City to add more equipment and personnel for efficient waste collection
The CoE said there was a shortage of vehicles which resulted in delays in the collection according to the fixed refuse removal calendar.
Residents in wards 92 and 36 have been expressing frustration over ongoing waste collection issues, with some streets in their areas going for more than two weeks without their refuse being collected.
In some cases, waste is picked up on certain streets while others are neglected, leaving residents struggling to find alternative disposal solutions.
City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) spokesperson Zweli Dlamini addressed the issue, attributing the delays to a shortage of vehicles and capacity constraints in the refuse collection system.

“There were changes in certain routes which resulted in the delays in the parts that the Depot had to provide the services due to capacity constraints,” Dlamini explained.
To resolve the issue, the CoE has reassured residents that additional resources, including personnel and equipment, have been allocated to clear backlogs and restore regular service.
“Sufficient resources have now been allocated to ensure efficient waste collection in all areas of Primrose East,” Dlamini said.
The CoE has also made plans to ensure waste collection is consistently carried out in line with the fixed weekly refuse removal calendar.

“The area has been allocated to the appointed service provider to take over from the week of November 18,” Dlamini confirmed.
As part of a broader initiative, the city is working with various stakeholders and organizations to promote waste reduction and recycling.
The city has signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with several partners to advance these efforts.
To ensure the service is monitored effectively, a permanent employee has been assigned to oversee the area, with additional oversight from the depot manager in Germiston.
The CoE has also issued compliance notices and penalties in cases of failure to meet contractual obligations.
Residents are urged to continue reporting any missed collections to the Customer Care Centre to ensure prompt action is taken.
