Doctor at local hospital doctor donates baby essentials
"As a doctor in South Africa, there are times and situations that truly make you realise the realities of our nation's healthcare system.
In honour of World Prematurity Day, Dr Ferini Dayal-Papagapiou, a surgeon at Bertha Gxowa Hospital, extended her support to mothers by donating essential baby items through her foundation.
World Prematurity Day, observed annually on November 17, aims to raise awareness about premature birth and its impact on families.
The following day, November 18, Dayal-Papagapiou delivered baby supplies to Bertha Gxowa Hospital, continuing her four-year partnership with Mini Miracles to fundraise for this initiative.

“Our programme, Prem Day by Dayal Foundation, collaborates with hospitals across Gauteng,” she said.
“Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital receives over 200 packs annually, while Bertha Gxowa, Rahima Moosa, and smaller hospitals also benefit.”
Dayal-Papagapiou, who was recognised earlier this year with the CEO Special Award at the Bertha Gxowa Hospital Service Excellence Awards, shared how her work in paediatrics at Baragwanath Hospital inspired her to focus on premature babies.
“As a doctor in South Africa, you face situations that reveal the harsh realities of our healthcare system.
“Working with neonates broke my heart, but it also motivated me to make a difference. The most rewarding part is seeing the impact we have on mothers and their babies,” she said.

She highlighted the challenges many mothers face, often stemming from difficult socioeconomic circumstances.
“These donations might provide temporary relief, but they create a meaningful difference during one of the most critical stages—newborn care—for both mother and baby.”
Each year, Dayal-Papagapiou, along with her family and hospital staff, personally distributes the supplies to ensure they reach those in need.
“Handing out the items ourselves ensures that the assistance goes directly to the mothers who need it most,” she added.
