“This is important for learners – to know whether they want a career in healthcare or not. We also had lunch after all the speeches were done,” said Mampe.

CEO of Bertha Gxowa Hospital Lebohang Khumalo delivered a keynote address and welcomed the audience.

“Today is about showing you the world of healthcare and inspiring you to explore career paths that may one day be part of your journey and the health sector’s next generation of leaders,” said Khumalo.

“At Bertha Gxowa Hospital, we pride ourselves not just on delivering excellent healthcare but on being a centre of compassion, learning and innovation.

“Named after Bertha Gxowa, a fearless activist for human rights and gender equality, our hospital embodies a spirit of service, purpose and community.

“We are committed to more than just treating diseases; we are here to improve lives. Every department, whether clinical or administrative, works together with a shared vision: to provide holistic care and make a meaningful difference in our patients’ lives.

“Many of you may be wondering how a hospital could fit into your future. Healthcare is more than doctors and nurses.

“The health sector relies on researchers, IT specialists, pharmacists, psychologists, dietitians, social workers and many others working in partnership to make it function.

“The beauty of healthcare is that it offers both science and service as ways to apply knowledge and compassion. Regardless of your interests, whether it’s biology, engineering, mental health or data analysis there is a place for you in this sector.

“Our healthcare system faces challenges such as the rising demand for services, limited resources and public health crises like mental illness and chronic diseases. But these challenges are also opportunities. They invite us to think differently, innovate and work collaboratively.

“As the future leaders of South Africa, your generation can help us solve the problems we face today.

“Whether it’s creating better systems, developing new treatments, or promoting healthier lifestyles, you have the power to shape the future.

“As you explore the hospital, ask questions, be curious and try to see how your talents might fit into the healthcare ecosystem.

“Some of you may discover that your passion lies in patient care, while others might find fulfilment in research or healthcare management.

“When you leave with one lesson, let it be this: healthcare is a calling that goes beyond individual careers.

“It’s about teamwork, resilience, and purpose. You have the chance not only to build your future but also to impact the lives of countless people in our communities.

“Thank you for being here today and showing interest in healthcare. I hope that by the end of this visit, you will feel inspired and motivated to find your place in this field.

“I wish you all an insightful and inspiring experience today. And who knows? Maybe, a few years from now, I will have the pleasure of welcoming you back—not as visitors, but as part of the Bertha Gxowa family,” said Khumalo.
