Ekurhuleni International Film Festival 2024 celebrates South African cinema and global talent

Join the Ekurhuleni International Film Festival this December for a dazzling celebration of creativity, culture, and storytelling.

The Ekurhuleni International Film Festival (EIFF) returns this December to celebrate the best of both South African and international cinema.

As one of the most anticipated events on the country’s cultural calendar, EIFF has solidified its place as a platform that promotes creativity, cultural diversity, and the rich narratives of African life.

This year’s festival promises to deliver a spectacular showcase of talent, with a focus on emerging voices alongside seasoned filmmakers.

The EIFF will take place on December 21, at Shiloh Ebenezer Church in Katlehong.

A platform for filmmakers and storytellers

A seasoned arts and entertainment professional, Jennifer Cloete, said that since its inception, the EIFF has been dedicated to nurturing and supporting filmmakers at all stages of their careers.

“By offering a mix of screenings, workshops, and networking events, the festival serves as an essential space for creative exchange and collaboration. Whether a filmmaker is just beginning their journey or has years of experience, EIFF provides a stage to share their work with diverse audiences and industry professionals,” Jennifer said.

The festival’s eclectic programming includes a wide range of genres, from drama and comedy to documentary and experimental films. all united by one common thread: storytelling that reflects the vibrant cultures and experiences of Africa.

EIFF has become known for its ability to amplify underrepresented voices, making it a cornerstone for innovation and fresh perspectives in the film industry.

A highlight of the EIFF is the highly anticipated awards ceremony, an evening that celebrates the finest achievements in filmmaking.

This year, attendees can expect a grand celebration of cinematic excellence, with awards in several prestigious categories: Best Feature Film, Best Short Film, Best Documentary, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Screenplay.

These awards not only acknowledge the hard work of filmmakers but also serve to inspire future generations of storytellers eager to make their mark in the industry.

Leadership and vision behind the festival

The EIFF owes much of its success to the visionary leadership of Tshepo Wambi, a prominent figure in South Africa’s emerging film industry.

As the festival’s director, Tshepo has played a pivotal role in transforming EIFF. His dedication to empowering filmmakers, by providing vital skills, networking opportunities, and a global stage for their work, has made EIFF a celebrated cultural institution.

“The festival has attracted thousands of submissions from filmmakers around the world and gained recognition for its commitment to fostering diverse and inclusive storytelling. The festival’s partnerships with organisations like SABC and CoE have further strengthened the creative economy of the region, amplifying local narratives and promoting global collaboration,” Tshepo said.

Ndumiso Dlamini, the festival’s co-ordinator, brings a unique blend of innovation and artistic vision to EIFF.

Known for his work in merging music and film, Ndumiso ensures that the festival’s programming remains dynamic, keeping it at the forefront of cultural trends and making it an unmissable event for those invested in the evolution of South African cinema.
