Ekurhuleni mayor calls for bursary to be re-instated
Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza leads by example, drawing support from donors as the city's bursary scheme raises over R8m and aims to boost education opportunities.
The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza is leading by example as he calls for donors in the resumption of Ekurhuleni’s bursary scheme, which had become inactive over the past years.
He pledged R50 000 during the Mayoral Golf Day on Thursday at Glendower Golf Club at Edenvale.
The mayor joined individuals and businesses who opened their purses pouring into the re-surging bursary fund, which has collected over R8m in just a few days.
The donations and pledges have opened since this week’s two-day Ekurhuleni Investment Conference hosted at Emperors Palace, as the municipality promoted itself as the best place to live, play and invest.
Xhakaza’s administration is positioning itself as a friend of businesses to revive healthy relations with companies benefitting the city’s economy and the residents.
“We cannot improve people’s lives alone as a government; we need to work side by side with corporates on various fronts and change our municipality for the better. Both municipality and businesses can provide jobs, skills and opportunities.”
Xhakaza continued to encourage a collaborative spirit.
“The CoE has officially opened to accepting donations towards the bursary fund. Alongside that, groundwork is underway to have a university in Ekurhuleni become a reality with the second symposium to get finer details set to take place early next year.”
