Mayor praises Finance MMC at final council of the year

His balanced approach will yield positive results in improving revenue collection rates.

Ekurhuleni mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza closed the city council’s final sitting of the year by reviewing his administration’s progress and achievements since taking office.

Addressing the council, Xhakaza reflected on the strides made in governance and service delivery over the past few months.

“Three months ago, I stood before this house to reflect on our administration’s first 100 days.

“Today, as we take stock of our progress, I am reminded of our theme: ‘A Responsive City Working with Agility to Restore Service Delivery to the People’,” he said.

Xhakaza highlighted key accomplishments, including the launch of the Service Delivery Fridays programme, which deploys MMCs to wards to address residents’ concerns.

“This initiative is part of our broader effort to build a responsive service delivery system based on data, public feedback, and accountability,” he noted.

Financial stability was another focus. The mayor emphasised the administration’s commitment to ethical and responsible public fund management, supported by enhanced audit and compliance measures.

“Our dedication to transparency and accountability in using public funds is unwavering,” said Xhakaza.

He also praised the MMC for Finance Jongisizwe Dlabathi for addressing financial challenges, particularly through the Siyakhokha Siyathuthuka campaign.

This initiative, he said, has revitalised the city’s credit control mechanisms while fostering a culture of service payment among residents.

Dlabathi is currently investigating billing inaccuracies for large power users, which have caused revenue losses.

Xhakaza expressed his confidence in the campaign’s ability to improve revenue collection, which is vital for sustaining service delivery and funding development projects.

“In the months ahead, we aim to build on this foundation, ensuring Ekurhuleni becomes a city of opportunity and equity for all its residents,” said Xhakaza.
