Guerreiro uncovers road safety concerns in ward 92

Seven hundred potholes have been recorded in Ward 92, some of which have caused accidents.

Ward 92 Clr Kade Guerreiro has raised concerns about the condition of the roads in his ward, attributing several incidents to potholes and inoperational traffic lights.

Seven hundred potholes have been recorded in Ward 92, some of which have caused accidents.

Guerreiro said the city had not treated these concerns as an emergency.

“In the first week of February, a vehicle broke down, and its wheels came off due to potholes,” said Guerreiro.

He added that, in recent weeks, there were no working traffic lights on Lazarus Mawela (formerly Barbara Road) and Pretoria roads, leading to severe traffic congestion.

“A serious collision occurred in Klopperpark due to the lack of working traffic lights.

“It is a congested road in the morning, and everyone is rushing to get somewhere. Someone might have skipped the traffic light, resulting in the accident,” said Guerreiro.

Weert Road is troubled by potholes.

“We have 16 sets of traffic lights not working in the ward,” he added.

He highlighted Weert Road in Sunnyridge near Laerskool Oosterkruin as having some of the most sizeable potholes in the ward.

“The situation is worsening by the day, and the wet season is accelerating the deterioration of these potholes,” he said.

“Parents are forced to use alternate routes, which increases traffic pressure on other roads.

“If you are coming from Northridge, you’ll use this route as a bypass, just as Amsterdam is for the Pretoria route, but the road is in terrible condition,” he said.

“The biggest issue is that traffic congestion continues to worsen as the road becomes unusable.

Those who use it must drive very slowly to navigate through. Although this is a residential area, it is a heavily used route because of the school,” Guerreiro stated.
