Red Cross steps up for humanity in Germiston

The Germiston branch of the SA Red Cross joined a 5km walk in Vanderbijl Park to mark World Red Cross Day, celebrating over a century of global humanitarian service and honouring founder Henry Dunant.

The Germiston South African Red Cross Society branch participated in a 5km walk in Vanderbyl Park to commemorate World Red Cross Day.

The day commemorated on May 8, marks the birth date of the organisation’s founder, Henry Dunant.

“The Red Cross and Red Crescent is the largest and most well-known humanitarian organisation in the world, addressing the needs of the most vulnerable in times of their greatest need,” said Germiston branch manager Barbara Jensen.

The South African Red Cross Society is a member of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the largest volunteer-driven organisation.

The Red Cross Society has 100 million members and a presence in 189 countries.

In August 2007, the South African government recognised the South African Red Cross Society as an official auxiliary to the government for humanitarian aid.

The South African Red Cross Society was established in 1921 and admitted to the IFRC in 1929. Today, it is a member of the IFRC Governing Board.
