Germiston athlete Marisa Beukes receives national colours

Despite facing illness and a demanding work schedule, she remains focused on future goals, including the World Championships and 2026 nationals in Germiston.

Pharmacist and master’s athlete Marisa Beukes is thrilled to have received her national colours in athletics.

Reflecting on her journey, she shared her thoughts at Germiston Stadium, where she trains.

“The national blazer was awarded to me after I had met all the criteria set. I qualified for it last year and it was handed over to me on May 4,” said Beukes.

Marisa’s success was fueled by her impressive performance last year, winning four gold medals.

“This year, I participated in the SA’s, which took place in the Eastern Cape. I won gold in relays, silver in the 200m, and bronze in the 100m and long jump,” said Beukes.

Despite facing challenges, including a busy work schedule and illness, Marisa remains focused on her goals of competing in the 45-49 age category.

“My work schedule has contributed to my performance this year with inadequate training time. I fell sick two days before the SA’s this year,” said Beukes.

“The adverse weather conditions in the Eastern Cape also affected my performance. The weather there was bad; the track was wet and cold. The change in weather makes the difference.”

With her national colours, Marisa can now compete in the World Athletics Championships next year, should she wish.

She’s motivated by South Africa’s recent international successes in athletics and aims to make her mark.

“The country has done well recently in China. I would also like to do well if I go to the world championships.

“I am preparing for the 2026 season and the next national championships, which will be held at the Germiston Stadium. I would enjoy the home-ground advantage,” said Beukes.

Coach Stephané Kotzé commended Beukes for her accomplishments and the courage to pursue her goals.
