A 47-year-old man was arrested in Delville after police discovered an unlicensed 9mm pistol and ammunition during a routine patrol. The firearm, linked to a government department, will undergo ballistic testing.

A 47-year-old man was arrested by members of the Germiston SAPS for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Members of the Saps were on routine patrols when they spotted a suspicious Toyota Hilux bakkie with five occupants on Elsburg Road in Delville.

After stopping the vehicle, a search revealed a male passenger was in possession of an unlicensed 9mm Parabellum pistol with 17 live rounds.

The suspect claimed to have purchased the firearm from a gun shop but couldn’t produce a licence, stating it had expired. A firearm inquiry showed the pistol belonged to a government department.

“The suspect was arrested, read his rights, and taken to Germiston SAPS cells pending his court appearance.

“The firearm and ammunition will undergo ballistic testing to determine if they were used in any crimes,” said Sergeant Maxwell Mabunda.

“The suspect will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon,” said Mabunda.

Brigadier Nonhlanhla Shezi, the station commander, commended the officers for their work, emphasising that removing firearms from the community contributes to a safer environment for the people.
