Gauteng Health invests R100 million in hospital upgrades

Following boiler breakdowns that disrupted hot water in May 2025, Gauteng’s Department of Health is investing R100 million to upgrade and maintain critical hospital equipment at Bertha Gxowa and Edenvale hospitals, ensuring improved service during winter and beyond.

The Gauteng Department of Health’s Infrastructure Unit has initiated critical upgrades at Bertha Gxowa Hospital and Edenvale Hospital to address infrastructure strain, especially during the winter season.

This follows boiler system breakdowns in May 2025 that disrupted hot water supply across several facilities.

An emergency response team of standby contractors responded quickly, restoring hot water services.

According to MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, the issues stem from outdated and poorly maintained equipment.

To prevent future disruptions, the department has empowered its Infrastructure Unit to manage a new in-house maintenance programme, supported by a R100 million allocation for the 2025 financial year.

This investment will help recapitalise critical equipment like boilers, chillers, compressors, and heat pumps.

Repairs have already been completed at:

• Bertha Gxowa Hospital: Malfunctioning hot water compressors repaired and serviced.

• Edenvale Hospital: Boiler system restored to working condition.

Clinical teams are monitoring hospital operations to maintain service efficiency, and the recapitalisation initiative is expected to reduce future equipment failures. The department has thanked the public for their patience as these essential upgrades continue.
