Primrose police tackle issues of crime in churches and schools

With 16 active recruits, the initiative has supported law enforcement operations, hosted public outreach campaigns, and is now calling on the community for urgent support to expand its efforts.

Since its inception in February, the Primrose CPF Next Gen Programme has emerged as a powerful force for crime prevention, youth development, and community service. With just four months under its belt, the group of 16 dedicated recruits is proving that young people have a meaningful role to play in building safer, stronger neighbourhoods.

The programme has seen the Next Gen team take part in a wide range of initiatives across the greater Primrose area.

Recruits have provided security at community events such as the Wychwood B Improvement District’s movie night and fun run, and conduct weekly patrols at Bill Stewart’s Nature Reserve monitoring for safety risks and deterring criminal activity.

Their role has also extended to high-level crime-fighting collaborations.

Through Operation Shanela and Operation Ukusebenza, Next Gen members have worked alongside SAPS, EMPD, and other law enforcement agencies in targeted operations addressing illegal drug activity, undocumented immigration, and the possession of illegal firearms in informal settlements.

Recruits have assisted in several arrests related to housebreaking and drug possession.

Training and discipline

Behind their visible impact lies a strong focus on personal growth, discipline, and readiness.

Recruits patrol three to five times a week, supported by monthly assessments to test both operational knowledge and theoretical understanding.

Each training cycle includes two compulsory training sessions, covering:
• Control room simulations for real-time response practice.
• Parade drills to instil discipline and order.
• Self-defence training, including Jujitsu and Krav Maga.

“This is more than just a patroller programme. We are shaping confident, responsible young leaders who can take charge in a crisis,” said Tatiana Robinson.

Future plans:

The Next Gen team plans to introduce certifications in first aid, firefighting, and trauma counselling, equipping recruits with life-saving skills for emergencies.

Another exciting initiative is a school outreach campaign featuring live skits on issues such as drug abuse and addiction. These performances will not only educate learners in an engaging, relatable way but also help recruits strengthen their public speaking and confidence.

Building a network of service

Next Gen’s work extends beyond crime prevention.

The team recently supported Spider Tactical’s winter soup drive and are now planning their own soup kitchen initiative to assist vulnerable residents through the colder months.

In collaboration with SAPS, they have taken part in school-based gang and drug awareness campaigns, including searches for narcotics among learners.

The team has also helped provide security at events hosted by local schools and community organisations, including Vryburger High School and the Scouts.

Community support urgently needed

Robinson said while the progress has been positive, the programme is not without challenges.

Transport remains a major hurdle, especially for late-night operations or when responding across wider areas.

The team also lacks funding for team-building activities that are essential for morale and cohesion.

“We have the heart, the drive, and the commitment. What we need now is more logistical support, transport, gear, and basic funding to help us continue this work and grow,” said Robinson

She said the Next Gen Programme is a testament to what is possible when youth are trusted with responsibility and supported by their community. Anyone who would like to support or donate the can contact Tatiana Robinson 78 461 2520
