Outreach programme brings joy and support to Germiston retirement village
The Edenvale Lions Basketball Academy swapped the court for community spirit, spending the day with Kruinhof Retirement Village residents, bringing food, friendship, and a whole lot of smiles.
The Edenvale Lions Basketball Academy (ELBA) spent the day with residents of Kruinhof Retirement Village on August 2 as part of their ongoing community outreach programme.
The visit, supported by local sponsors, brought food, companionship, and entertainment to the elderly residents, creating a day filled with smiles and camaraderie.

They were joined by learners from Dowerglen High School and volunteers who assisted throughout the day.

One of the event’s sponsors, Sue Sogot of Jack Russell Estates, said their decision to get involved was an easy one.
“Coach B and Coach J do a lot of community work, uplifting the youth of Edenvale and the surrounding areas.
“We want to support wherever we can, whether it’s the youth, the elderly, or people with special needs.
“Our goal is to bring joy and sunshine to people’s lives. We must look out for one another as communities and as a nation.”
Sogot added that around 100 beneficiaries, including residents and volunteers, were impacted by the initiative. She also encouraged more local businesses to get involved.

“If businesses invest in their communities, the community will, in turn, support them. It’s about looking after what’s on your doorstep.”

ELBA co-founder and head coach Edson Makavan explained that giving back is an integral part of the academy’s mission.
“This is something we do regularly, feeding the elderly or the underprivileged,” Makavan said.
“We have incredible partners like Build It Edenvale and Jack Russell Estates who have supported us since the start. We want this to become an annual activity, and I encourage other Edenvale businesses to join us.”
He emphasised the importance of involving young people in caring for the elderly.

“Life is a cycle. By involving the youth in these initiatives, we show them that one day they will also rely on others’ care. It’s about instilling values of respect and responsibility early on.”
Makavan also revealed that ELBA recently formed a partnership with Dowerglen High School.
“We’re running basketball training at the school, and they are on board with our outreach initiatives. This event is a great example of how sport and community service can work hand in hand.”
Reuben Shiviti from Build It said supporting the event was part of their commitment to the local community.
For Kruinhof resident Vanessa Price (60), the visit was a heart-warming experience.

She thanked all the sponsors, as well as the schools and volunteers who made the day possible.
“It’s not just about the food; it’s about the company and socialising. Many of us don’t see each other often, even though we live in the same place. Days like this bring us together.”
