Germiston Home Affairs clean-up under way as arson suspects appear in court

Restoration work has started at the fire-damaged Germiston Home Affairs office, while suspects linked to the arson are facing charges in court today.

Clean-up operations are under way at the Germiston Home Affairs building following the August 12 fire, which caused extensive damage to the facility.

The blaze, which authorities suspect was an act of arson, disrupted services and left the building in need of significant restoration.

Today, suspects arrested in connection with the incident are appearing in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court.

They face charges related to the fire, which took place during protests linked to evictions in the area.

City officials have confirmed that debris removal and safety assessments are in progress, with the aim of restoring services as soon as possible.

To ensure services continue, mobile Home Affairs offices have been deployed:

* Smart ID card and passport applications are being processed at the Germiston Civic Service Centre car park.
* Reprints of certificates can be done at any Home Affairs office in Gauteng.
* Late registration of births is being handled at the Alberton and Boksburg offices.
