Sunnyridge Primary celebrates South African heritage with vibrant musical play

The spirit of South Africa and its heritage came alive at Sunnyridge Primary last Thursday, as learners staged a spectacular concert under the banner of a musical play titled Local as Lekker.

From the moment the curtains opened, the school hall was filled with the rhythms of South African legends.

The learners performed to the beats of amapiamo, Mango Groove, Mafikizolo, TKZee, Brenda Fassie, Waka-Wake and more, showcasing the timeless power of music to connect generations.

What made the production stand out was its ability to blend the old with the new.

While honouring South Africa’s iconic musicians and cultural practices, learners also brought in modern elements by performing popular TikTok challenge songs that had the audience clapping and singing along.

The mix reminded everyone that heritage is not just about the past, but also about how young people carry it forward in fresh and creative ways.
