Young Germiston boxer crowned Fight of the Night champion

Laerskool Oosterkruin learner Jordan Cothill, nicknamed “Baby Canelo,” is already making his mark in the boxing world at just 13 years old.

At just 13 years old, Laerskool Oosterkruin learner Jordan Cothill is making waves in the boxing world.

Affectionately nicknamed “Baby Canelo” by his coach, Jordan is proving that talent, discipline, and hard work can turn big dreams into reality even at a young age.

Jordan’s journey began after watching a Mike Tyson fight on YouTube. “I decided I wanted to try out, and from that day onwards, I knew it was my thing,” shares Jordan.

That spark of inspiration has since grown into a burning passion that drives him to push beyond limits.

That passion has recently won him the RDG Fight of the Night title belt. His boxing journey started eight months ago, and he said it has not been easy but has been worth it. Like many athletes, Jordan faced early challenges.

“I struggled with fitness, but I overcame that with dedication and hard work, by pushing myself to the limit and never giving up,” he said.

His perseverance has paid off, with achievements arriving sooner than he expected. “I thought it would take some time to achieve success, but I am very thankful it happened so early into my journey,” said Jordan.

Behind every young athlete is a strong support system, and Jordan is quick to credit his family, friends, coach, and faith. “My biggest support has been my family, friends, coach, and the drive to win and do good. As long as I have the Lord on my side, nothing is too difficult,” expressed Jordan.

He has also embraced the lessons boxing has taught him. “Discipline, resilience, and self-belief are the most important things when it comes to being an athlete,” Jordan explains.

His advice to other aspiring boxers is, “Do it. If I can put my mind to it, then I can do it, and you can too. It’s never too late to start something,” said Jordan.

Looking ahead, Jordan has ambitious goals. He wants to take his skills to the international stage and, one day, become a World Champion, perhaps even one of the greatest boxers of all time.

His coach, who has been with him since the beginning, believes those dreams are within reach.

“Jordan was one of my very first clients when I opened the gym, and from the start, I saw something special. He’s still young, but his boxing knowledge is far beyond his years.

“He’s the first person at the gym and the last to leave. He never questions me, always trains hard even on off days, and listens to everything I say,” said coach Layten Gloss.

The coach doesn’t hesitate to call Jordan his prodigy. “He’s kindhearted, soft, and respectful, but once the gloves are laced, he turns into a beast. I call him ‘Baby Canelo.’ Take my word for it, when Jordan Cothill turns professional, he’ll be headlining with big names and eventually be a World Champion. People will know his name,” said Gloss.
