Public-private partnership ensures uninterrupted traffic lights in Johannesburg CBD
It's a partnership to keep key traffic signals running during power cuts, improving safety and easing congestion.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has partnered with the Africa Housing Company (AFHCO) to provide a secondary power supply to four key traffic signals in the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD).
The initiative, part of the Traffic Signals Backup Power Initiative, ensures traffic lights remain operational during power outages and load shedding, improving both safety and traffic flow.
The four intersections now supported are at the corners of Siemert Road and Error Street, Error Street and Sivewright Avenue, Sivewright Avenue and Charles Street, and Charles Street and Siemert Road.
Power will be supplied directly from the AFHCO building, helping reduce congestion and the risk of accidents during peak hours, especially in the rainy season.
The partnership was formalised at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 30 at AFHCO in Siemert Road.
Since its launch in May 2023, the JRA’s initiative has worked with more than 44 companies to provide uninterrupted power to 113 traffic signals across Johannesburg. The programme highlights the value of public-private partnerships in addressing infrastructure challenges.
“At AFHCO, we are committed to making a meaningful difference in the communities we serve,” said Tiiso Masipa, AFHCO general operations manager.
“Through our partnership with the JRA, we are proud to be part of a solution that directly improves safety and mobility for road users.”
JRA CEO Zweli Nyathi praised AFHCO’s involvement and encouraged other businesses to follow their lead.
“The backup power from AFHCO will go a long way in ensuring safer and more efficient traffic management in the CBD,” he said.
