Rest A While appeals for donations to bring Christmas cheer to the elderly

The Rest A While Community Centre is calling on residents and businesses to help bring joy to local seniors this Christmas through its annual hamper initiative.

As the festive season draws near, the Rest A While Community Centre is calling on residents and businesses to help bring joy to the elderly in the community.

Each year, the centre runs a Christmas Hamper Drive, an initiative aimed at ensuring that no senior citizen spends Christmas without a warm meal and a reminder that they are loved and valued.

“For many of the elderly who rely on the centre’s support, Rest A While is more than just a place to gather; it’s a second home.

Throughout the year, the centre offers daily meals, companionship, and a place of belonging,” said centre manager Trudy Carreira.

She said the social activities help to combat loneliness. But as December approaches, the focus shifts to spreading festive cheer through the annual Christmas Hamper Project. “This time of year can be especially difficult for our elderly community members.

“Some of them live alone and have no family nearby. The Christmas hamper reminds them that they are not forgotten and that their community cares,” she said.

The hampers are each filled with non-perishable food items, toiletries, and a small treat to make the season special.

This year, however, due to rising food costs and limited funding, the centre fears they may not be able to reach as many seniors without additional help.

The community centre is appealing for donations of non-perishable foods, such as maize meal, sugar, tea, tinned goods, long-life milk, and biscuits.

Monetary donations are also welcome and will go toward purchasing fresh produce and essential items closer to Christmas Day.

“We believe in the power of community. Even the smallest contribution can make a big difference. A single tin of beans or a bar of soap can bring dignity and comfort to someone in need,” said Carreira.

Donations may be dropped off at the Rest A While Community Centre from Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 15:00. For more information or to arrange a donation, contact Carerreira on 082 366 4010 or 011 828 3059.
