EMPD warns motorists to be cautious as heavy rainfall increases flooding risk

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) has issued a safety alert as persistent rainfall causes flooding in low-lying areas, bridges and major routes across the city.

The EMPD has urged motorists and residents to exercise extreme caution as widespread rainfall continues across the City of Ekurhuleni.

According to the EMPD, ongoing downpours have increased the risk of flooding in low-lying areas, river crossings, bridges and several key roadways.

Motorists are advised to avoid flooded routes and refrain from attempting to drive through deep or fast-moving water.

The department reminded drivers to adjust their behaviour on the road to match the hazardous conditions.

Key safety recommendations include reducing speed, maintaining a safe following distance, and keeping headlights switched on for improved visibility.

Motorists are also encouraged to stay alert for slippery surfaces, fallen debris and other potential obstructions.

Residents travelling on foot are urged to avoid flooded pathways, drains and riverbanks, as water levels may rise quickly and without warning.

The EMPD reiterated that public safety remains a top priority and called on road users to remain vigilant throughout the wet weather period.

“Your safety is our priority. Let us work together to stay safe during these wet conditions,” the department said.
