Germiston CBD crackdown recovers over R3m in municipal debt

Supported by EMPD and SAPS, the mayor's blitz through the Germiston CBD restored order, enforced compliance, and addressed over R13m in legacy municipal debt.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni, Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, led a high-impact by-law enforcement blitz in the Germiston CBD.

This forms part of the city’s ongoing efforts to restore law and order in key urban spaces.

During the operation, the city recovered just over R3m owed to the municipality. Supported by the EMPD and the SAPS, the blitz saw officials from the mayor’s office enforce municipal by-laws by closing shops operating without proper documentation or those failing to meet compliance standards.

This coordinated operation forms part of the mayor’s broader renewal agenda, which aims to strengthen law enforcement visibility, improve compliance in economic hubs, and create safer public environments across Ekurhuleni.

Xhakaza said the blitz prioritised enforcing municipal by-laws to ensure a safer and more orderly CBD by addressing illegal trading, permit compliance, and unlawful electrical connections.

“Removal of unlawful electricity connections forms part of the blitz. We collected an amount of R3m from Rand Airport and continued to the municipal housing in Delville, where we disconnected illegal connections. Their debts form part of the legacy debt; they owe the City over R13m.

“We want to create a safe environment for residents and businesses,” said Xhakaza.
