WATCH: Gauteng learner transport crash kills 12, several injured in Vanderbijlpark

Authorities investigate minibus-tipper collision as survivors receive hospital care

Twelve learners were killed, and several others injured, when a learner transport vehicle collided with a truck in Vanderbijlpark this morning, January 19.

The crash involved a minibus taxi and a side tipper truck on the R553 near ArcelorMittal.

Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Gauteng Forensic Pathology Service responded immediately.

Five survivors, including the minibus driver, were taken to Sebokeng Hospital, while two others were transported to Kopanong Hospital for further treatment.

She extended her condolences to the relatives of the deceased and emphasised that all survivors are receiving care in line with Gauteng public health standards.

“The department continues to provide support and closely monitors the situation. Our priority is ensuring the injured receive the best possible care,” said a spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Health.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision. Emergency services and hospital staff continue to manage the aftermath, and motorists are urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

Arrive Alive, a road safety campaign, reiterated the dangers of learner transport collisions, highlighting the need for strict compliance with road safety regulations, vehicle maintenance, and careful driving to prevent similar tragedies.

“Our thoughts are with the families, schools, and communities affected by this heartbreaking incident,” said the Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson.
