Executive Mayor Xhakaza confirms death of MMC Andile Mngwevu following Mozambique floods
The Office of the Executive Mayor has confirmed the death of Ekurhuleni Roads and Transport MMC councillor Andile Mngwevu, who lost his life after the vehicle he was travelling in was swept away by floods in Chókwè, Mozambique.
The Office of the Executive Mayor has confirmed the passing of Ekurhuleni MMC for Roads and Transport Planning, Andile Mngwevu.
Mngwevu died after the vehicle he was travelling in was swept away by floodwaters in the Chókwè area of Mozambique.
The news of his death emerged following several days of search efforts in the affected region.
Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza expressed condolences to the Mngwevu family, confirming that the councillor was serving both as MMC for Roads and Transport Planning and as leader of government business in the City of Ekurhuleni.

In a statement, the mayor described Mngwevu as a committed public servant who played a key role in advancing mobility, infrastructure development and service delivery within the city.
The mayor extended condolences to Mngwevu’s family, friends and colleagues, as well as to the families of three other individuals who were travelling with him during the incident.
On Tuesday, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Xhakaza and the MMC for Finance visited the families of those who died to offer condolences and pay their respects.
The City of Ekurhuleni also conveyed its sympathies to the people of Mozambique who have been affected by recent flooding, which has resulted in the loss of lives and widespread damage.
