WATCH: Fire crews battle wind-driven blaze at Makause informal settlement

A swift response from the City of Ekurhuleni’s fire department prevented further disaster this morning as multiple shacks were engulfed by flames at the Makause informal settlement.

Multiple shacks were destroyed at the Makause informal settlement on February 26 after a fire broke out around 08:00.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) arrived to find several structures already well alight.

Strong winds fuelled the blaze, causing it to spread rapidly through the settlement.

Teams from the Primrose, Germiston, Edenvale, and Albertina Sisulu fire stations responded promptly. According to DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi, their co-ordinated efforts brought the fire under control before it could engulf a larger section of the community.

No fatalities have been reported. While the fire has been contained, the number of residents displaced or who lost their homes is not yet known. Authorities have confirmed that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
