Disaster teams deployed after storm damages homes in Katlehong

Strong winds and heavy rain on March 23 left 11 households damaged in Kwanele Ext 2, with emergency teams deployed to assist residents.

Disaster Management and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) teams from the City of Ekurhuleni were deployed to the area in Kwanele Ext 2, following the severe weather incident that caused significant damage to homes.

A localised storm struck at approximately 16:38, prompting multiple emergency calls from residents.

Reports indicated that strong winds had blown off roofs and caused several walls to collapse.

Emergency response teams, including firefighters and rescue personnel from nearby stations, were dispatched immediately.
Upon arrival, they confirmed that at least 11 households had sustained structural damage.

“No other injuries or fatalities were reported,” said city spokesperson Tikkie MacDonald.

Disaster Management teams have since conducted assessments in the area, with relief operations providing immediate support to displaced families, including the distribution of essential supplies.

“The primary focus was ensuring the safety of residents and providing swift assistance to those affected,” said MacDonald.

Residents in Kwanele Ext 2 are urged to remain cautious and report any further damage to emergency services.

Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesperson William Ntladi also warned residents of the continued downpours that the CoE will experience.

“Currently, the CoE is experiencing a copious amount of rain, and DEMS remain on high alert and would like residents in general across the city to be on high alert as well,” said Ntladi.

“The soil is saturated, so flooding is imminent. Water currents in the streams, rivers and dams are stronger, which poses a risk of drownings.

“Those living on the floodlines next to the rivers and dams should be extremely cautious for possible flooding,” said Ntladi.

He also reminded that road surfaces are wet and slippery, while potholes aren’t visible.

Motorists are urged to follow road rules and regulations, and they should ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy.
