Rest-A-While launches programme to assist the elderly

Carreira explained that the programme directly benefits registered members and helps sustain the centre’s operations.

Rest-A-While Service Centre for the Elderly is calling on community members to support its “Adopt-a-Granny or Grandpa” programme aimed at assisting vulnerable senior citizens.

The initiative encourages individuals to sponsor the monthly meal costs of at least one elderly person, helping to ease the financial burden on both beneficiaries and the centre.

Centre manager Trudy Carreira said the programme plays a vital role in ensuring that elderly members who cannot afford meals are supported.

“We accept contributions ranging from R50 to R600 or more, depending on the length of the month and how the menu is currated. This is the average cost to feed a granny or elderly man who is a member of the centre,” she said.

Carreira explained that the programme directly benefits registered members and helps sustain the centre’s operations.

“This support allows us to keep our doors open. Funding from the Department of Social Development is allocated on a yearly basis, but it is not always sufficient, so we rely on additional fundraising and community contributions,” she said.

She highlighted the role of long-standing partners such as Accumulo Consulting, which recently donated a generator and contributes monthly through the programme.

“Most of our sponsors are private individuals who give what they can to support the elderly,” Carreira added.

Many of the centre’s beneficiaries live in nearby government flats and retirement homes and face multiple financial pressures.

“They often have to cover maintenance costs, medication, transport, groceries and rent. What we try to do is subsidise their shortfall so they can live with dignity,” she said.

Community members interested in supporting the initiative can contact the centre directly on 082 366 4010 or contribute via the Rest-A-While Service Centre for the Elderly bank account.
