NASA astronaut inspires Assumption Convent learners during national space tour

Assumption Convent School was recently honoured with the opportunity to host NASA astronaut Dorothy Metcalf-Lindenburger as part of the Living Maths National Space Tour 2026, on July 28.

Fondly known as “Dottie,” Metcalf-Lindenburger is an educator, geologist, and passionate advocate for STEAM education. Her visit brought excitement and inspiration to learners, as she shared first-hand experiences from her journey beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

In 2010, she travelled aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery on the STS-131 mission to the International Space Station, completing an incredible 238 orbits of the Earth. She also formed part of a historic milestone in space exploration, when four women were in space at the same time for the first time.

During her visit, Metcalf-Lindenburger captivated students with fascinating stories from space, offering a glimpse into life as an astronaut and the challenges and triumphs of space travel. Her message resonated deeply with learners as she emphasised that success is built on curiosity, courage, and the willingness to embrace challenges.

She encouraged students to remain curious, to face obstacles with determination, and never to be afraid to dream big. Her words served as a powerful reminder that the pursuit of knowledge and passion can take one beyond even the stars.

The visit left a lasting impression on the school community, reinforcing the importance of science, exploration, and perseverance.
