One man died, and three others were injured in an early-morning motor vehicle collision on the M7 in Zonkizizwe on September 27.

Emergency services were alerted to the scene shortly after the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) Emergency Call Centre received a distress call at approximately 00:55. Fire and rescue personnel were dispatched.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered two light motor vehicles, a Ford Figo and an Audi A4, stationed on the side of the road with severe damage. Emergency personnel quickly worked to assess the occupants of both vehicles.

The driver of the Ford Figo, a man believed to be in his 30s, was declared deceased on the scene by paramedics.

Hydraulic equipment used in extrication

DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi said firefighters were required to utilise specialised hydraulic rescue equipment to extricate his body from the wreckage.

“A passenger in the Ford Figo, a male in his 20s, sustained moderate injuries. He received medical treatment on-site before being stabilised and transported by paramedics to a nearby hospital for further care,” said Ntladi.

“Meanwhile, two men occupying the Audi A4, the driver and a passenger, escaped with minor injuries. Both declined further medical transportation to a hospital following on-scene assessment.

“The precise cause of the collision remains unknown at this stage. The crash scene has since been handed over to the SAPS and police launched an official investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
