Parents and teachers share emotions as Grade One learners take their first steps into the new academic year.
It was a morning of mixed emotions for parents and learners as the academic year began at Sunnyridge Primary School, School of Affirmation, and Bedfordview Primary School.
For many, the day marked a milestone, particularly for parents dropping off their Grade One learners for the first time.

“It’s emotional but exciting. You worry, but you’re also proud to see them take this next step,” said Siyabonga Vilakazi.

Teachers arrived ready, bringing renewed energy and a clear sense of purpose.

Educators expressed eagerness to set the tone for a focused and productive year.
School principals echoed this sentiment.

“The first day sets the pace. We want learners to feel safe, inspired, and motivated from the moment they walk through our doors,” said Juanita Horn, highlighting the importance of a strong start to the academic year.
