A number of cyclists recently participated in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge, in the name of the Lambano Sanctuary.
The riders showed their commitment to their cause by tackling the tough race.
Lambano Sanctuary is a non-profit organisation that cares for 30 HIV-positive children through its four homes in Malvern East, as well as running an 18-bed paediatric hospice/medical step-down facility for children with terminal illnesses.
This was the third time that Lambano Sanctuary has been represented at the race, which took place at the Waterfall Country Estate, in Sunninghill.
Lambano uses this event as a platform to create awareness of its programmes, including the homes and hospice.
The organisation also uses the race to raise much-needed funds to care for its permanent children, as well as the hospice admissions.

It costs Lambano R7 400 per month to care for each child and this encompasses educational costs, food, clothing, housing and medicals.
“We were blessed with 33 cyclists this year, excluding a corporate cycling team who chose our organisation as one of their two beneficiaries,” said Lambano’s fund-raiser, Portia Mlangeni.
“Each rider showed determination and commitment towards this initiative and we are hoping to raise at least R150 000 this year through the riders’ fund-raising efforts.”
Lambano Sanctuary is seeing great growth in this event as they started with only 12 cyclists in 2011 and have almost tripled in size since then.
“We thank our sponsors, Perfect Touch, Riverside Wellness Centre, SMAC, Wakaberry, Peterbill Transport, Gabriel Motors, Soweto Towers, Dolce Vita, SAB, ABI, Malvern Spar and Trans Electron for helping us with the event,” said Mlangeni.
