Swimming championships in Delville

EGA's Provincial Championships.

Eastern Gauteng Aquatics (EGA) held their annual provincial championships from December 5 to 9, at the Delville Swimming Pool, as usual.

The championships were a success, with the number of participants growing every year.

“We had awesome growth this year, clubs from all around Gauteng attended and we had clubs from other provinces come and visit us, we had a great turn-out,” said Caroline Vorster, committee director for the local organising committee.

Swimmers participate in a number of galas throughout the year, accumulating points in the hope of qualifying for the championships at the end of the year.

A number of prominent people from Swim South Africa (SSA) also showed their faces at the opening of the championships.

Swimmers put on superb performances and a number of records were broken.

The breathtaking heats proved that South African swimming is growing and progressing towards greatness.

“South African swimming is actually very healthy,”said William Vorster, president of the EGA .

“We’ve had swimmers excel in South African championships, in some cases records are broken by local swimmers and the future looks bright.”

The audience was in high spirits and encouraged swimmers throughout the event, motivating them to do their best.

“I must say the venue is beautiful and the event is well organised; this our first time attending these championships and we will definitely come back again,” said Thienus Nortjie, chairman of the Titans Aquatic Club, at the Vaal.

“We are so motivated that my colleagues and I are thinking of starting something of this nature back at home,”

The participants were enthusiastic and eager to compete, some even felt that the intervals between heats and medals presentations could be shorter.

All they wanted to do was swim.
